8 Jan 2012 – Hamas and Fatah have reached an agreement to swap their prisoners during reconciliation talks currently underway in Gaza, Press TV reports.
The decision was made on Saturday.
The representatives of Fatah and Hamas have held a number of meetings in Gaza over the past few days to speed up the implementation of the national reconciliation agreement signed in Cairo in May 2011.
During his trip to Gaza, senior Fatah official Nabil Shath met with a number of Hamas officials to end years of rivalry between the two parties.
Other Palestinian factions participating in the reconciliation efforts said the parties are close to resolving a number of issues such as political detainees and passports for Gaza residents.
“We have discussed a number of issues such as the political unrest and detainees, as well as issuing passports based on political affiliation. We gave both factions an ultimatum to implement what was agreed upon within two weeks,” Khalid Batsh, a member of the Islamic Jihad Movement of Palestine, said.
